Maths · Maths: changing a proportion

The diagram shows 20 seats. The shaded seats are reserved. Two of those reservations are then cancelled, so those two seats become unreserved. What percentage of all 20 seats is now unreserved?

Twenty seats in four rows of five. Eight seats are shaded as reserved; twelve are initially unreserved.

Choose one answer.

  1. A60%
  2. B70%
  3. C30%
  4. D50%
  5. E90%
Show answer and explanation

B: 70%

Initially 8 seats are reserved and 12 are not. Cancelling two reservations leaves 6 reserved and 14 unreserved. Since 20 seats represent 100%, each seat is 5%; 14 × 5% = 70%.

Know the format

Independent Bexley-related numerical component practice informed by current Quest guidance. This extended paper has 50 original questions and an Exam Quay 45-minute clock. It does not reproduce Bexley’s two combined booklets or claim an official standalone numerical timing. NVR is not included. Most questions require one answer; a few explicitly require exactly two, three or four. Select the stated number. Exam Quay awards one mark only for the complete correct set, otherwise zero, with no negative marking. This is our marking rule, not a claim about the official algorithm. Do not use a calculator. Spare paper may be used for working. Use the values and relationships supplied in diagrams rather than measuring the image.

Print at home or sit online

The PDF and online sitting use the same questions. Print during your 90-day access, keep your private copy and mark offline with a parent or tutor. No physical copy is supplied. Offline answers are not uploaded or benchmarked. Downloading either booklet before completing online excludes that sitting from the first-sitting cohort.

Choosing your next paper

Papers 1–3 contain different questions, not calibrated difficulty levels. Review this sitting before moving on; you do not need all three to start.

About your benchmark

Your raw mark and worked answers are always included. A percentile becomes available only after 100 eligible first standard-timed sittings of this exact paper version. It compares the Exam Quay practice cohort, not all applicants. No pass mark, admission probability or national percentile is promised.
