English · Reading: interpreting evidence
A roof after rain
For four weeks, a school caretaker compared two small roof sections. One was bare; the other held a shallow tray of plants. After each shower, she measured how much water ran from each section into a bucket. The planted section usually released less water immediately, but sometimes continued dripping after the bare section had stopped.
Her notebook did not claim that the plants made rain disappear. Some water stayed in the tray for a time. She also wrote down a limitation: the sections did not receive exactly the same amount of sunlight. Before recommending a larger planted roof, she wanted a longer trial with more closely matched conditions.
Which claim is best supported by the caretaker’s observations?
Choose one answer.
- AThe plants prevented all water from reaching the roof.
- BThe planted section could delay some of the water running off.
- CBoth sections stopped dripping at exactly the same time.
- DA larger planted roof was certain to need no maintenance.
- ESunlight had no possible effect on either section.
Show answer and explanation
B: The planted section could delay some of the water running off.
The planted section often released less water immediately and sometimes continued dripping later. That supports delayed runoff, not the disappearance of all water or certainty about a larger roof.

ADAPTED MCQ SKILLS PRACTICE, NOT A FULL CSSE TEST SIMULATION. This original Exam Quay paper covers comprehension, applied verbal reasoning, language/editing and recognition of writing-craft choices. It does not ask for, mark or assess continuous writing; selecting writing choices is not a substitute for composing prose. The current official CSSE English test is 60 minutes plus 10 minutes reading and includes written responses and continuous writing. Our independent allocation is 50 MCQ questions in 60 minutes INCLUDING reading, with advisory 30/12/8/10-minute sections and no separate reading period. Each question scores one mark for exactly the stated one or two choices, with no partial credit or negative marking. These counts, timing allocation and scoring are Exam Quay choices, not a claim to reproduce official paper structure or marking.
