Maths · Maths: area without double-counting

A rectangular board measures 60 cm by 40 cm. A strip 10 cm wide along the left edge and a strip 10 cm high along the bottom edge are shaded. What is the total shaded area? The shared corner is counted once. Diagram not to scale.

  5. E1,200 cm²
Show answer and explanation

C: 900 cm²

The bottom strip has area 60 × 10 = 600 cm². Above it, the remaining part of the left strip is 40 − 10 = 30 cm high, so its area is 10 × 30 = 300 cm². Total: 600 + 300 = 900 cm². Adding both full strips would count the 10 × 10 corner twice.

Know the format

Independent HBS-related Maths skills practice developing KS2 numeracy relevant to round two. The school does not release its round-two papers or detailed content and marking specifications. This is an Exam Quay MCQ paper with 50 original questions and a 50-minute practice clock, not a reproduction or complete simulation of the unpublished school test. Choose one answer A–E per question. Each correct answer earns one mark; there is no negative marking. Do not use a calculator. Use spare paper for working. NVR is not included. A matching practice duration does not establish equivalence to the school assessment.

Print at home or sit online

The PDF and online sitting use the same questions. Print during your 90-day access, keep your private copy and mark offline with a parent or tutor. No physical copy is supplied. Offline answers are not uploaded or benchmarked. Downloading either booklet before completing online excludes that sitting from the first-sitting cohort.

Choosing your next paper

Papers 1–3 contain different questions, not calibrated difficulty levels. Review this sitting before moving on; you do not need all three to start.

About your benchmark

Your raw mark and worked answers are always included. A percentile becomes available only after 100 eligible first standard-timed sittings of this exact paper version.
